In Clive Barker's novel The Great and Secret Show he deals with a concept known as The Art. While never explained in full detail, the Art appears to be the opening of the human mind and the ability to access Quiddity. The Art is kept from the wrong hands by a group known as the Shoal. The Art possessed a powerful draw for anyone who knew of it, but most who had been decreed not worthy were prevented access by the Shoal. It also seems possible that The Art holds some connections to the Iad, beings similar to Cthulhu and his brethren (see H.P. Lovecraft).
