Carruthers surveyed the wreckage before him. It was hideous. The chaos, the utter destruction, that met his eyes was unbelievable. There were bodies lying strewn everywhere. Who would ever have believed, he thought, that so much damage could have been done in such a short time?
He felt sick to the pit of his stomach, and the pain was almost too much to bear. When at last he spoke into the quiet of the morning his voice was filled with passion and determination. "I am never," he declared devoutly, "as long as I live, going to get that drunk again."
