The Pirc defense also know as Modern defense (sometimes referred to in the plural, Pirc defenses) a concept and an actual set of moves. It starts with whites kings pawn moving forward two.  Black then moves their queens pawn forward one.  After this the idea is for black to move out its kings knight, kings knight pawn and kings bishop in anyway they see fit. Its a way of getting the flexibilty of the Indian defense when white starts with a king pawn (Indian defense is used with Queen pawn openings and trying to do it without using The Pirc normally means white brings out their queen and starts devouring you.). Here is the chess notation:

1. e4    d6

and then black trying to move Nf6,g6 and Bg7.
