The first sci-fi movie serial of the sound era, and arguably the weirdest. The Phantom Empire chronicled the adventures of singing cowboy Gene Autry, who discovers a vast, underground city called Murania beneath his homestead at the Radio Ranch. Its inhabitants possess advanced technology and goofy costumes, plus evil robots, death rays, and mad scientists.
