La Dominion de la Lumière

A series of paintings by Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte. The paintings, mostly done around 1952, were all of relatively the same style. They feature a fairly distant view of a quiet street in a quaint European city, usually with closely spaced apartment buildings. There were ornate street lights dimly illuminating the area around them. The thing that makes them "surreal" is that in every painting, the sky is bright, midday blue or white, sometimes with wispy clouds. Yet, everything else is consistent with the setting of a quiet street at night. Spooky.
