Teuro is a popular German pun on "Euro", the EU's new common currency. Teuro comes from the German word teuer , which means "expensive". Many Germans feel that merchants, when converting prices from Marks to Euros, have rounded prices up, hence making things purchased in Euros just that much more teuer. While Germany's inflation rate is 1.1%, a recent study found that a sampling of 100 consumer products showed merchants raised prices by 4.4% during the introduction of the Euro. The most pronounced rises came at bakeries, pubs, and pizza parlors.
