The average highness or lowness of a vocal piece, the tessitura determines which vocal part(soprano, alto, tenor, bass, etc.) is most appropriate.
Although I have see it described as such in any musical term dicitonary, I have also heard the tessitura being referred to as the vocal break by a few music professors.
