TCS is a movement that promotes the idea of non-coercive parenting, based around ideas presented in a paper journal and online discussion list founded and maintained by Sarah Lawrence. Some of the ideas put forth by TCS seem to be almost common sense, yet receive frequent and hostile criticism from many parents, most of whom seem to find it impossible to consider the idea that their method of child rearing may not be ideal.

For example, one of the radical and controversial concepts endorsed by the TCS adherents is the notion that children are individual human beings who deserve the same rights and respect as adults. With this in mind, the TCS philosophy suggests a relationship between parents and children that consists of finding "common preferences", rather than having the traditional authoritarian parent/child relationship.
