The final book in Armistead Maupin
's Tales of the City
series, which mainly deals with the breakdown of Mary Ann and Brian's marriage. Mary Ann has become a major celebrity in San Francisco
, and is offered syndicated network coverage and a job in New York
hosting her own talk show: she decides to take it, and to leave her husband and adopted child behind. Meanwhile, Brian is working in the nursery as partner to Michael, now cosily shacked up with Thack in a cottage not far from Barbary Lane. Mrs Madrigal
is on holiday with her daughter in Lesbos
, having a wild fling with a nice old Greek, while Mona explores the 'lowercase lesbian' side of the island.
The book was published in 1990 and marked the end of the series. Presumably, as Michael had been HIV positive
for the last three episodes, a seventh book would have meant killing him off. Maupin opted for the open-ended approach, which leaves the series on a hopeful note.
