Channel of water between continental North America and Vancouver Island, ending in Puget Sound at its eastern end. Discovered by Greek-Italian explorer Juan de Fuca in 1592 while in the service of the Spanish Crown and named after him by the Russians in 1725. At the time of its discovery it was speculated that it may be the western end of the North-West Passage, holy grail of navigators for centuries.
