Strain 121 is the nickname for a recently discovered organism that can reproduce at 121° C. It was found in a water sample from an underwater vent 2.4 kilometers beneath the Pacific Ocean. Strain 121 has been placed in the Archaea domain along with Pyrolobus fumarii, another heat resistant microbe. This new microbe is the only known organism that can withstand the heat and pressure of an autoclave.
