A tiny town in the midst of the Great Plains, Steele is the seat of Kidder County. Its founder had hoped it would be the state capital, but Bismarck won out. The grass is tall, the sun is bright, and the wind never seems to stop blowing. It's quite pleasant during the summer.
Interstate 94 passes through on its way from Bismarck to Jamestown. The Greyhound bus stops for lunch at the town's commercial center, a restaurant and motel called the Lone Steer. The food is tasty and cheap, so don't skimp and just get a burger. The waitress, who looks awfully young, flirts with everyone.
A 38-foot tall sheet metal totem stands watch. The World's Largest Sandhill Crane is painted battleship-grey; in places it is beginning to rust. Illuminated at night, it's the tallest thing for miles.
