This is the University of Chicago football field underneath which the first man-made self-sustaining nuclear reaction took place. Enrico Fermi was in charge of the whole shebang. The football field was later torn down to be replaced with the Regenstein Library, from which I am currently typing this writeup. The historic reaction is now commemorated by a large, hollow bronze sculpture in the shape of a mushroom cloud, which sits just to the west of the library building, as well as being remembered in the form of T-Shirts put out by residents of Pierce Hall which bear the logo, "Where the End of the World Began."

Should you wish to visit the place and bask in its glow, the monument can be found on the 5600 block of South Ellis Avenue in Chicago, Il.
