The
Silver Broom was the name of the trophy awarded to the winner of the international curling championships from 1968 through 1985.
The first international curling championship was held in 1959 when Canada's national champions faced off against Scotland's. The match was sponsored by the Scottish Whiskey Association and was called the Scotch Cup. Air Canada started sponsoring the tournament in 1968 and provided a trophy -- the Silver Broom.
Air Canada dropped sponsorship in 1986. The championships continued without a sponsor until 1995 when the Ford Motor Company got involved. The championship is now referred to as the Ford World Curling Championships.
Countries that have competed in the world championships include: Canada, Scotland, United States, Australia,Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, England, Italy, Germany, Wales, Holland, Denmark, France, Finland, and Japan.
