(German, derived from the grape's supposed origin in Transylvania)

Variety of green grape, considered to originate in Austria. In 1999, Silvaner accounted for about one sixth of the grapes cultivated in Alsace, approximately 2600 hectares, and Germany has about 7500 hectares under cultivation, particularly in Rheinhessen, Pfalz and Franken.

Silvaner grapes produce light, fruity white wines, with a flowery bouquet.
