Puppet leader installed by the British during the First Anglo-Afghan War, in return for agreeing to give up all Afghan claims to Peshawar. Shah Shujah was persuaded to this action by the Brits and the British East India Company. Lord Auckland and William Macnaghten preferred Shah Shujah to Dost Mohammed, who was already better-liked and more powerful in Afghanistan. On October 1, 1838, Auckland issued the Simla Manifesto, which stated that Dost Mohammed, by dallying with powers other than Great Britain, had shown himself to be unfriendly, and would be removed from the throne and replaced by Shah Shujah. Shah Shujah had been deposed from the rule of Afghanistan twenty years before.
