Bruce Wayne: Targeting me won't get their money back.I knew the mob wouldn't go down without a fight, but this is different. They crossed the line.

Alfred Pennyworth: You crossed the line first, sir. You squeezed them, you hammered them to the point of desperation. And in their desperation, they turned to a man they didn't fully understand.

Bruce Wayne: Criminals aren't complicated, Alfred. Just have to figure out what he's after.

Alfred Pennyworth: With respect Master Wayne, perhaps this is a man that *you* don't fully understand, either. A long time ago, I was in Burma. My friends and I were working for the local government. They were trying to buy the loyalty of tribal leaders by bribing them with precious stones. But their caravans were being raided in a forest north of Rangoon by a bandit. So, we went looking for the stones. But in six months, we never met anybody who traded with him. One day, I saw a child playing with a ruby the size of a tangerine. The bandit had been throwing them away.

Bruce Wayne: So why steal them?

Alfred Pennyworth: Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

***

Bruce Wayne: The bandit, in the forest in Burma, did you catch him?

Alfred Pennyworth: Yes.

Bruce Wayne: How?

Alfred Pennyworth: We burned the forest down.

”I would gaze up at the stars after a night shift and think that they looked like a glowing desert, and I myself was a poor child abandoned in the desert... I thought that life was truly an accident among accidents in the universe.” Ye Wenjie, in reflection - The Three Body Problem

“If you succeed in solving the three body problem, you will be the savior of the world. If you stop now, you’ll be a sinner. If someone were to save or destroy the human race, then your possible contribution or sin would be exactly twice as much as his.” Shen Yufei, issuing a threat - The Three Body Problem

"Until a man is twenty-five, he still thinks, every so often, that under the right circumstances he would be the baddest motherfucker in the world." - Snowcrash

"Maps don't just have outside edges. They have inside edges. Holes." - A Wise Man's Fears

"You may not have been one of us before, but you are now. Whether you like it or not." - S.

"... and the one on the pigeons, trained to peck a button that made a grain of corn appear. Three groups of them: the first got one grain per peck, the second one grain every other peck, the third was random. When the man in charge cut off the grain the first group gave up quite soon, the second group a little later. The third group never gave up. They'd peck themselves to death, rather than quit." - The Handmaid's Tale

Messages on Wed, 10th Nov 2004. 01:38 JohnnyGoodyear m/sg EDITORS ONLY: Course the ideas is that everyone apart from Serjeant's Muse who's the only decent writer on this site will eventually be an editor and we'll make our money off-a what the Sarge writes. Keep it under yer ego.

2005.01.12 at 02:34 etouffee says re Mad Girl's Love Song- to quote "and her world was unthreading itself at both ends".. love that... so much more gentle than unraveling... very nice job

Messages on Sat, 24th Feb 2007 15:15 Halspal: Serjeant's Muse is about my favorite noder if you don't count a bunch of other noders, but I don't get that quest at all. Are you supposed to write about horses?

2007.03.06 at 04:37 kthejoker says re Prosenoder's Cup 2007: A good vignette, perhaps a bit too married to your title (can it be helped?) He's very richly drawn, but I felt like I was missing his angle. In every character there is one overriding virtue, and a corresponding vice. But 300 words is a bit tight for waxing philosophical : )

2012.01.09 at 04:55 jessicaj says re Don't come back, don't call. Think of another way.: You have mad linking skills. It's like a story within a story. And "morose code" is so damn good.

2012.01.21 at 13:26 Halspal says re Put: Great job on the put/call writeups, muse. Options stuff looks like a lot of fun but I haven't messed around with it in real life yet.

A candle burning in a dark room; the biography of an idea, still in the womb.

I'm not as smart as I think I am. I have read an alarming amount of books in my lifetime. I have written a play that was performed on stage. I once ran 500 miles in one summer. The only thing I enjoy more than crafting a story is sharing it. I am never in more doubt than when I create something that is very good. I use obscure quotes to compensate for weak social skills. I am addicted to winning. I wrote my first story in kindergarden; I also illustrated it. Being told I tore my achilles tendon was the third most painful moment in my life--tearing it was somewhat lower. I am shy. I was not on a plane until I was 21. I have been a scientist since I was 10. In a decade of competitive running I earned one individual gold medal; I keep this on a desk at my parents' home--it was not for a varsity event. I was on top of Mt. Washington once and it was the highest I had ever been. I have never completed a crossword puzzle in a newspaper. I secretly want to write a play that winds up off-Broadway. I think anything can be done, if you try. I am dangerous to myself and others in a bookstore. I do not understand females. I am the luckiest poker player you will ever lose to on a consistent basis. I like the color blue. I enjoy learning something new every day. I don't enjoy being taught. I held a xc course record at Vernon highschool for approximately eight days. I cause the most trouble when I'm being quiet. I've never punched somebody and really meant it. I speak in rhyme and scrawl poetry when drunk. I was disillusioned by the education process once in fourth grade, and again six days into 9th. I believe evolution is a theory, incomplete with inexplicable gaps. I believe intelligent design has no more right to be taught in a science class than the parable of Adam and Eve does. On weekends I will leave the shade open so that after the sun wakes me I can roll over and go back to sleep. I sleep better... I enjoy being outdoors. Being barefoot is severely underrated. "If you need a bookmark, the book isn't worth your while." I need a girl who will know the crossword answer before me, but be nice enough to let me figure it out first. I think chess is the most classical board game; also the most savage. I could sit in front of a fire on a cold night and watch the coals for hours. I once whittled a whale out of soap for a merit badge. I know how to juggle. Max and Dakota were my favorite pets. I will use subtlety, but hardly ever recognize it in return. If I like you I will tell you a story anytime you ask for one.

"It took me a lifetime to learn how to paint as a child."

"If you saw Atlas, the giant who holds the world on his shoulders, if you saw that he stood, blood running down his chest, his knees buckling, his arms trembling but still trying to hold the world aloft with the rest of his strength, and the greater his effort the heavier the world bore down upon his shoulders--what would you tell him to do?"

"I...don't know. What...could he do? What would you tell him?"

    "To shrug."

    Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

"A wasp crawls along your arm, and you sit perfectly still, telling yourself that he won't sting you unless you flinch, unless you try to kill him. You hold your breath and hope he won't sting you and probably he doesn't want to. But that's not trust, is it? It's fear and fascination."

When a gazelle awakes on the plains of Africa, he knows he must outrun the fastest lion, or he will be killed and eaten. When a lion awakes on the plains of Africa, he knows he must outrun the slowest gazelle, or he will starve and die. Either way you look at it, when the sun comes up, you had better be running.

The very fact that we have flame throwers means that somewhere a little while ago, someone was standing around thinking. "You see those people over there, I sure would like to light those people on fire. But I'm just not close enough to get the job done. If only I had something that would throw the flame on them." And it could have ended there but he happened to mention it to his friend. A friend that was good with tools, who came back some weeks later. "Hey! that sure was a good idea about the flamethrower" *flame thrower sound* And then the army. "Hello, we have some people we'd like to throw flame on. Give us 10,000. and paint them dark brown. Camoflague them, so that nobody can see the flamethrower."
