Spike Lee's 1987 follow-up to
She's Gotta Have It. A
musical comedy about life at a Southern all-black
college campus.
Spike, a graduate of a HBCU himself, wanted to make a point about the social divisions within all-black colleges, such as the conflicts between party kids and the socially conscious and between light and darker skinned African Americans.
The movie is uneven at times and Spike uses the characters as prototypes more than real people but it's an still entertaining effort. On the brighter side Lawrence Fishburne (played Morpheus in The Matrix ) gives a stand-out performance.
