The Sanger Centre
has an amazing DLB
right over the receptionist
's desk. The centre is one of the major contributors to the Human Genome Project
(they do about a third of all the DNA sequencing
). The DLB displays continuously the number of base
s sequenced (both finished and unfinished); this is presumably an estimate
rather than the exact number. But it also displays actual sequence
which is new in the database
. The feeling while watching it is of observing the Human Genome Project's continuous advance. And I was there in late 1998; the pace has picked up considerably since then!
This is an example of Digital Light Blinker technology being used for good ends.
