A sanap is a strip of cloth placed over the outer edge of a tablecloth to prevent it from becoming soiled or frayed. The word derives from the Old French sauvenape, which itself derives from sauver, "to save", and nape, or "tablecloth", which incidently is the same French word found in "napkin".
