Girl Scout cookie: flattened toroid of caramel, covered with toasted coconut, with fudge stripes.

samoas actually have an interesting history, at least in some parts of the united states. in many places, these cookies are no longer called samoas, but rather Caramel deLites. they were originally named samoas because of the coconut--the name was chosen because it brought to mind images of tropical islands. but sometime in the late 80's/early 90's, it was decided this was politically incorrect, so the name was changed. (trefoils were renamed shortbread at this time as well, again for correctness issues--trefoil had too many "religious connotations", apparently.) in some regions the name was never changed, and in some it has been changed back in recent years. but that's the reason the same cookie has two different names.
