SCARA is an acronym for Selectively Compliant Articulated Robot Arm. A SCARA has axes of motion analogous to a person's shoulder and elbow, which provide horizontal motion, and perhaps another axis at the wrist, to provide rotation. Vertical motion may be provided by another axis either in the wrist or in the robot's base.

SCARAs are used in manufacturing assembly and physical therapy, among other places.
