Russian has a system of cases that can make any student of the language wince in pain. However, I think the case system, though sometimes redundant and confusing, gives the language a beautifully distinctive fluidity. With six cases nominative (subject), accusative (direct object), dative (indirect object), genetive, prepositional, and instrumental. Combined with the fact that almost all nouns have a plural, this means that each noun has at least twelve forms. There are also three genders : masculine, feminine, and plural. In contrast, English has only 4 forms of each noun (man, men, man's, men's), gender is basiclaly non-existent except in proper nouns, and case only shows its face in pronouns, which are either subject or object. With the exception of irregular plurals, there's not much to remember in regard to English nouns.

Russian nouns have regular endings for gender, case, and number, but spelling can change depending on how the noun ends in the nominative, the default form. Here are all the endings, including spelling changes. When talking about Russian phonology, 'soft' means it has some palatal-ness to it, and 'hard' means it doesn't. Masculine animate (A) refers to proper nouns and or nouns that have a life of their own (dog, man, driver, etc.). Itransliterated the words for those of you who have the misfortune of not being able to read Cyrillic, and becuase I have extreme difficulty writing it in my browser while trying to make columns (The Cyrillic is at the bottom, by word):
