A quaint variant of the
Norwegian language, greatly resembling the more modern
Bokmål, thought by many to be the "
standard" form of Norwegian.
Riksmål differs from Bokmål in a number of ways, the most notable differences being the more Danish-like spelling of certain words, and the more extensive use of en (male)-endings to nouns, often combined with more modern a (female)-endings.
While Bokmål and Nynorsk are both regonized as official written languages in Norwegian and are both used at a quota of minimum 40% in official documents, Riksmål is mainly used in the capital Oslo, and has not gained such official recognision. Certain organizations, such as Riksmålsforbundet continuously fight for the recognition of Riksmål as a separate written language.
