Authorized 1952 English language revision of the American Standard Version of the Bible (copyrighted in 1901-- itself a revision of the King James Version of 1601). The New Testament was published in 1946, and the Old Testament completed in 1951. Authorized by the National Council of the Churches of Christ, which approved the work of 32 scholars (reviewed by 50 advisors of various denominations). The Revised Standard Version Bible Committee is a continuing body, with representatives in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. It issued the second edition of the New Testament in 1971.

Advances in interpretation and discovery of new texts in Semitic languages led to a complete revision in 1989. See New Revised Standard Version.
