Astonishing 1998 album by Mad Donna. William Orbit's production and song-writing contributions seem to bring out the best in both of them. Orbit certainly benefits from having a strong voice and songs to work with, rather than his more usual self-indulgent techno-wibble. Madonna, in return, gets the most exquisite textures and settings for her songs. Several tracks (Ray of light, Substitute for love) are clearly inspired by the birth of Madonna's first child around the same time, but (unusually for a pop-star-parent) this does not mean they are complete sentimental mush.

A landmark in both their careers.
