After military service during World War I, von der Goltz was sent (in early 1918) to Finland as commander of the German "Baltic division", which battled against elements of the Red Guard in the Finnish Civil War. In 1919, von der Goltz was supreme commander of the German forces which battled the Red Army in the Baltic.
