I make no claims as to the truth of the following. It’s just something I heard.
From around ten years ago, I casually brought up The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy in a conversation with, of all people, a Nintendo game counselor. Oddly enough, he claimed to have spoken to Douglas Adams at one time (unlikely), and that he, being Adams, had actually entrusted this counselor with his original, rejected, idea as to the identity of the Ultimate Question (even less likely). According to this person, the setting of the Ultimate Question was two Englishmen together discussing existential matters, and the question turns out to be something along the lines of:
“Hey, what’s it all about, anyway? I mean, life, the universe and everything. Is it about (list of things which are commonly represented as making the universe worthwhile)?”
The response, then, would have been:
“No, for tea, too.”
I personally do not think this argument is worth a pair of fetid dingo’s kidneys, but it does somehow seem an Adamsian twist to base the universe upon a sleazy pun.
It may also shed some light upon the ultimate significance and relevance of tea and no tea in Infocom’s interactive fiction version of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
