A usually small group of people that play any of the three Quake games or one of their modifications. They usually band together because of friendship, need for camaraderie, affinity for a particular modification, or even taste in player models. Clans are usually loosely bound organizations with little in the way of leadership or structure, though most make use of a ranking hierarchy to denote seniority or skill level. Some, however, are very well organized groups that have defined leadership and even sponsorship from gaming hardware companies such as Everglide, 3dfx, and Mad Cats that have grassroots marketing efforts.

Some clans attend regular LAN parties to play games or comete as a group in competitions or tournaments. Some also have dedicated "clan servers" to play on, practice on, or compete on.
