Stolypin was a provincial governor when the Russian Revolution of 1905 broke out. His efficient handling of the unrest led to his appointment in 1906 as minister of the interior, and later prime minister.
In his capacity as prime minister, he continued the government's suppression of the revolution, but simultaneously launched the so-called Stolypin Reform (1906), which attempted to break down the communal village farming system and institute a new class of conservative yeoman farmers. The reforms were in the process of being implemented when they were interrupted by World War I, in 1914. Stolypin himself, however, was already dead - assassinated in 1911.
