pronounced pee-gan

A branch of the Blackfoot Nation. They exist as a people now almost exclusively on reservations. When the bison were almost exterminated in the early 1880s, nearly one-quarter of the Piegan died of starvation. The rest were relocated to Indian reservations in Alberta and Montana.

There was a famous Piegan woman warrior named Pitamakan (Running Eagle). Trick Falls in Glacier National Park was originally named for her, but the name was changed by white people.
