A very simple technique in music theory.
A Picardy third is made by altering the tonic chord of a minor scale. The third is raised a half step, thus changing the minor chord into a major chord. This technique is most often used at the end of a whole minor piece, or the end of a cadence.
Example: the last chord in many arrangements of Greensleeves.
