Peter Hoeg

Peter Høeg is a Danish author most known for the book Smilla's Sense of Snow. According to one of his book jackets,

"..born in 1957 in Denmark, he pursued various interests-he was a professional dancer, an actor, a sailor, a fencer, and a mountaineer- before turning seriously to writing."

He has been compared to Joseph Conrad, and at times the description seems apt. In fact he parodied Conrad in a short story "Journey Into A Dark Heart", about Europeans exploring and totally missing the essence of Africa. His greatest work (in my opinion) has to be his novel, Borderliners; it's part suspense story, part philosophical inquiry into the nature of time and the humanity of mathematics.

His complete library is Smilla's Sense of Snow, Borderliners, The History of Danish Dreams, Tales of the Night and The Woman and the Ape.

The History of Danish Dreams is a very fascinating book. I am in the process of reading now.

Smilla's Sense of Snow, is one the most entertaining, intelligent, and thought provoking books I have ever read.

Since reading Smilla, I have been fixated on travelling to Iceland (I know, I know it's about Greenland... Although, in one of the later chapters, they radio to Rekjavik)
