Also known as a patent ductus arteriosus. This happens when the ductus arteriosus, which is a connection in the fetal circulation between the pulmonary artery and the aorta, fails to close at birth.
This can result in heart failure if the shunt is large.
Medical treatment with indomethacin may stimulate the duct to close. If this is unsuccessful, the duct can usually be closed surgically or angiographically.
