The Permian Basin is a large geological formation that spreads across West Texas and into New Mexico. The basin is thought to be the remnants of a prehistoric seafloor. The area is rich in petroleum deposits and is thus very important to Texas' oil industry. Area cities include Midland, Odessa, Big Spring, and Monahans. Most of the land is very flat, with the notable exception of the Guadalupe Mountains and the Davis Mountains.
