The first novel published by science fiction/fantasy writer Eric S. Nylund. The main character, Roland Pritchard, works as a graveyard shift convenience store clerk. However, when he sleeps, his dreams are elaborate and consistent: he seems to literally lead a life in a different world. When he discovers that he is not the only person who inhabits both our world and Meredin, the dream world, and when he learns that he is the lost scion of one of the royal houses of Meredin, entertaining exploits ensue. The plot is an interesting idea, thought slightly derivative, but Nylund writes so well that you probably won't care. A good first effort. I recommend his other books, A Game of Universe (perhaps his best), Dry Water, Signal To Noise and A Signal Shattered.
