In chess, a passed pawn is one that has advanced past any enemy pawns, so that there are no pawns directly in front of it, or on adjacent files between it and its queening square. A passed pawn is something you always want to have, provided you can protect it, and something you never want the opponent to have. The ideal formation is a protected passed pawn, which is a passed pawn that is also part of a pawn chain.
