David was too popular to suit his father-in-law, King Saul. So the king "sent messengers to David's house to watch him, that he might kill him in the morning" (1 Sam. 19:11). But with the aid of his wife, Saul's daugher Michal, David escaped being murdered and fled. The king retaliated by giving Michal to another man, Palti, of the tribe of Benjamin. After Saul died, the commander of his army, Abner, sought a reconciliation with David, who agreed to peace on the condition that Michal be returned to him. She was taken from Palti (in this passage called Paltiel), who followed behind, "weeping after her all the way to Bahurim" (2 Sam. 3:16) on the eastern outskirts of Jerusalem; he stopped only when the commander ordered him to go home.
