2,650 mile long hiking trail linking Mexico and Canada, via California, Oregon, and Washington. Traverses the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades. In the Sierra, there are portions where you can hike for 200 miles without encountering a road.

Going north is preferred route, due to winter snow covering much of trail until midsummer. Plan on a five month trip, four if you go light. You'll have to resupply yourself by mailing parcels of food in advance to small stores or ranger stations.
