Mitsune, an early tenth century poet, is the author of my favorite Japanese poem, "The White Chrysanthemum". Very little is known about his life, despite his prestigeous position as one of the four court poets ordered by the Emperor Daigo to compile a poetry collection, the Kokinshu (Collection of Poems Old and New). He died around 925 AD.
