Written in the 1920s by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the Olympic Oath is taken by a representative athlete from the host nation on behalf of all of the competitors. The representative holds a corner of the Olympic Flag and recites the following words :-

"In the name of all competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules that govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams."

A very similar Oath is taken by a representative of the officials/referees of the Games.
