One old chestnut goes like this:

You have two ropes (or fuses, or whatever). Each of them requires one hour to burn completely. However, they may burn irregularly, such that half of the rope may burn in more or less than half an hour; you don't know the burning time of anything less than a full rope. How can you measure 45 minutes accurately with these ropes?
