Step away, lady,
from out this muddy
light.
Don’t ask me, sweetie
“Make cheeks ruddy
tonight.”
Pinch your painted lips
that fur coat has no
bite.

Before streetlights,
her chilled glove
fell into dirt.
Her suspended exit
(O she waits, my love,
such poetic hurt!)
Like an unturned page
consummate marble dove
I will not let this work
on me.
Can’t you see honey?
Truly?

I’d inhale your eyes
unblinking
until reality, dawn,
and stork

awake this dream and
hold you dry, spooning
and kissing always hey
I’d even raise your
kids, starve
myself. Eat
rocks
.

But I cannot betray
our trust, I must
be left alone.
In having you I could
not write (so trite)
Another sappy poem.
