In RNA, the sugar is ribose, hence the name ribonucleic acid. In DNA, the closely related sugar deoxyribose occurs (deoxyribonucleic acid). The purines for both are adenine and guanine; the pyrimidines are cytosine and uracil in RNA, cytosine and thymine in DNA.
