The Nuclear Energy Agency - (NEA) was created in 1957 with the name "European Agency for Nuclear Energy" as a branch of OECD and mantained its original charter up to 1972, when the name was changed as non european nations started to join it. It's currently based in Paris, France.

The NEA mission is to "assist its Member countries in maintaining and further developing, through international co-operation, the scientific, technological and legal bases required for the safe, environmentally friendly and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes". This mission is achieved by working on two main areas of interest:

  1. coordinating research efforts by member states about industrial uses of nuclear energy, and
  2. controlling and coordinating nuclear fuel supplies for civil and industrial uses.
The NEA has close relations with the Vienna based with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), that is the branch of the United Nations dealing with atomic energy.
