A paranoid
conspiracy theorist will tell you that this text (from the Great Seal of the United States) is Latin for "
New World Order".
However... a more conventional translation would be "New Order of the Ages". Other translations might include "A Mighty Order of Ages is Born Anew" or "The Ages' Mighty March Begins Anew" or "The Great Series of Ages Begins Anew." Literal translation gets tricky here.
The phrase was chosen by Charles Thomson, who adapted it from some Vergil (it is Latin ... just not for that). The reference in particular is to the fifth line of Eclogue IV:
"Magnus ab integro seclorum nascitur ordo," which referred to a prophecy regarding the fate of the Roman empire and is somewhat prosaically translated as:
"Now the last age by Cumae's Sibyl song has come and gone,
and the majestic roll of circling centuries begins anew...
the Iron age shall cease, the Golden race arise...
and shall free the earth from never-ceasing fear."
