Latin, this is a line from Quintilian in his Institutio Oratoria, Book IX Chapter 3, meaning "I do not live in order to eat, but I eat in order to live."

Quintilian uses the line as a demonstration of antimetabole, a rhetorical device in which a phrase or sentence is repeated with two of the words in reversed order in the repetition. This is, itself, a demonstration of antithesis, in Latin called contrapositum or contentio, the use of contrasts to emphasise a point.
