A
Poem in the
Before Choice Disturbs collection
Night Drives
Push me into the canyon night
And rev the engine hard.
The cornrows become active walls--
Blur and darkness make them solid.
Drive the car down the center line
Till we're an accident not waiting to happen,
But unfolding, materializing now.
Our fate divided into the small moments
Of an accelerated push.
Rushing past unlit farmhouses,
And stealth corn silos.
Over iron bridges and country roads
We feel ourselves expand.
Yeah, push me into the canyon night,
And rev the engine hard.
Where we become the silent walls--
Blur and darkness make us solid.
