screenplay writer and
movie director, born in
1945 in
New York.
He is mostly known for his Sherlock Holmes pastiches
"The Seven Percent Solution", "The West End Horror", and "The
Canary Trainer", and for directing "Star Trek II: The Wrath of
Khan" and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country", as well as
co-writing "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home". He also co-wrote
"Sommersby", starring Richard Gere and Jodie Foster.
The movie "The Day After", which he directed for ABC was nominated
for seventeen Emmys.
