Literally a 'new pharynx', the term neopharynx refers to the new 'reorganized' space present after major surgery to the throat, such as a laryngectomy. Damage to and reconstruction of the neopharynx can cause serious swallowing problems, so the neopharynx may continue to be a chronic problem even after the primary disorder is resolved.
